A Word From the Founder

Nichole Hancock Happy New Year!!

It is so hard to believe that choir is off to its 5th season. Wow, time sure flies when you are having fun! Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful breast cancer survivors who, have and continue, to share the testimonies with me and so many others. This organization was founded because I felt that breast cancer survivors needed a place to "Celebrate their Survival," not hide it and I believe that we are doing just that and we will continue to do so. Not only are we a fun group, we are a non-traditional support group for many of our members, except our support group is more than just breast cancer focused. Shades of Pink offers them a platform of support on any issues that may be bothering them. In other words, we are there for them and they are there for each other regardless of any problem, crisis or issue that arises in their lives.

As we kickoff this season the choir will continue performing for local and national audiences. However, we have several goals that we would like to accomplish this year: develop the choir´s first CD single of "You Are Not Alone;" implement additional educational programs for survivors and their families; and host our very own concert here in Atlanta. In addition, to boosting membership and volunteerism within the organization. I´d also like to see the number of corporate sponsors that support our efforts increase as well.

In the past, Shades of Pink has been successfully run by a small committed group; however, we do recognize that in an effort to expand our reach and efforts we are going to have to better utilize our volunteers and supporters in a big way. No longer can we do this alone. So we are calling on not just Atlanta, but Georgia to help us grow. We need to take our "Message of Hope Through Song" to as many people, agencies, corporations, faith and community based groups as we can. Without monetary and in-kind support it is very hard to sustain this organization and launch new programs that will ultimately benefit all survivors. There is power in their ability to share their testimonies through song. Power that hopefully moves some people to take responsibility and action for their own health or the health of a loved one. I am strong believer that non-traditional, innovative methods (like the choir) have the ability to change behaviors, attitudes and perceptions. So will you join us in our quest to "Be and Do More" for our community in 2009?

Sincerely,
M. Nichole Hancock
